Our pork comes from traditional breeds of pig such as Wessex Saddleback, a striking looking black pig with a white belt originating from the UK and which has adapted well to the Australian climate. Once common in Australia, the Wessex Saddleback is currently bred by only a handful of registered breeders and is now critically endangered. Unlike modern pigs, which have been selected for fast growth rates and large litters, old style traditional breeds like these are known for their superior tasting meat.

The pigs live outdoors on farms that are built on sustainable principles to ensure soil fertility and high biodiversity are maintained.

Each day after the morning feed, they have plenty of time to play, graze, sleep, wallow or forage for food on specially grown pasture crops.

The pigs are given a nutritionally balanced diet, free of antibiotics, growth hormones, preservatives and any synthetic additives. They have access to clean water and small open shelters lined with straw provide warmth in the winter and protection from the harsh sun in summer.

Sows getting ready to farrow have the luxury of their very own open shed and large, tennis-court sized pen in which they can move around freely. This ensures they are not disturbed and allows bonding time with their piglets until they are ready to wean. They are able to build their own nest from the straw lining and grass gathered from outside.

Our Victorian pork farms are certified by either NASAA or Demeter and are regularly inspected to ensure they meet strict standards of organic production.
